Sabyasachi has opened a new 26,000+ sq. ft. flagship in New Delhi, more than doubling the footprint of his earlier store and introducing a dedicated High Jewellery salon and accessory parlour. But the real story is not its size. It is what the space represents: a very different idea of what luxury retail can be.
With 120 chandeliers, nearly 200 antique carpets, 300 original artworks, and more than 100 antique textiles, mirrors and decorative objects, the flagship feels less like a boutique and more like a living archive. Inspired by luxury train travel, old Calcutta homes, the city’s trams and Bengali hospitality, the interiors bring together fragments of history, art and personal memory.
This is where Sabyasachi’s maximalism becomes particularly interesting. At a time when luxury has been defined by minimalism, muted palettes and quiet sophistication, he has stayed committed to abundance. His interiors are layered, theatrical and filled with objects, but never without intention. Luxury here isn’t about having less; it is about having more meaning.
The role of art is equally important. Works from the Sabyasachi Art Foundation sit alongside textiles, sculptures and antiques, blurring the boundaries between fashion, architecture and art. Craft isn’t simply displayed as heritage; it becomes part of the environment itself. In that sense, the store feels like preservation through use, giving traditional art and craftsmanship a place in contemporary luxury.
That philosophy also connects to Sabyasachi’s long-standing position on customisation. In a world where luxury increasingly means “make it yours,” he has remained protective of creative authorship. The Sabyasachi bride doesn’t necessarily need to change the design to make it personal. The design remains Sabyasachi; the individuality comes from how she wears and inhabits it. In an age obsessed with customisation, that commitment to a distinct artistic identity feels almost radical.
For me, that is what makes the new Delhi flagship feel significant. It isn’t simply a new address for Sabyasachi. It brings his journey, his Calcutta, his art, his craft and his memories into Delhi, creating a space where heritage isn’t frozen in time, but reinterpreted for the present.
And perhaps this is where luxury is heading next: away from anonymity and towards authorship, collecting, culture and character.
